There have been many studies done to assess the benefits of having a doula. There are actually now sixteen published, randomized controlled studies including more then 5,000 women. (Klaus, p 75) The studies include women from Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Finland, France, Greece, Guatemala, South Africa and the United States. Below is a summary of the findings.

Short term benefits of having a Doula at your birth:

-Shorter hospital stay for the baby after birth
-Lower cesarean rate with or without an epidural by about 45%
-25% shorter labor
-Natural* vaginal delivery more likely, 55% of women with a doula only 12% of women had natural vaginal deliver without a doula present.
-Less likely to need pitocin to induce or augment labor
-Need of forcepts reduced by 34%
-Need of pain medication reduced by 31%
-Lower maternal fever rate
-Higher breast-feeding rate
-Higher satisfaction with how the birth went
-Lower postpartum depression

Because of all these benefits, cost is reduced dramatically, even with the cost of the doula factored in.

*Natural Vaginal Delivery: No synthetic oxytocin, medication anesthesia or forceps were used.

Long term benefits of having a Doula attend your birth:


-Higher breast-feeding rate and for longer period of time
-Healthier child, measured by fewer colds, coughs, vomiting and diarrhea
-Better appetite in the baby
-Mom spends more time with the baby
-Mom is more responsive to babies needs
-Moms report less anxiety at 6 weeks, less depression and higher self-esteem
-Higher satisfaction with the partner after the birth
-Mom has a higher perception of the baby and herself at 6 weeks and feels she is the best caregiver of her child
-Enhanced long term attachment
