Philosophy of Birth:

A woman's body is made to birth her children naturally and without intervention. Basically, our bodies work. They are not too small, not too slow, they do go into labor on their own. If you allow a woman to birth naturally, in a comfortable setting without extra stressors, she is able to have a beautiful birth experience.

Personal:

I am the youngest of 3 girls in my family, but the first to have children. I have always been the type of person to do things my way and it may seem like I make rash decisions, but every decision I make comes out of much internal debate with a great deal of thought and research. When I decided to have a natural birth I had a couple of reasons, first I was, am and always will be more afraid of the epidural then the birth itself. I knew the birth could not harm my body, but the epidural would. The second reason was, I wanted to do what was best for my child and me. This reason was actually planted in my head in my third year of college. I was in a class learning about child birth and the different techniques. The natural Bradley Method really seemed so perfect for a newborn. So, this decision for natural birth didn’t surprise my family a bit, but when I told them I would be having a home birth, the first words out of my dad’s mouth were, “Kristen, that is crazy, you absolutely cannot do that, you will hate it!” But, when he arrived at my house about an hour after my son was born and came up to my room where the midwives were so gentle and everything seem so right and natural, my dad said, “This is amazing, you absolutely made the right decision for you.” He was completely right, it was the right decision for ME, not for everyone. Every mother is different and should decide for herself and her child what is best.

My name is Kristen Mortensen and I am now a DONA certified doula in Orange County. I have two children whom I birthed naturally at home with a midwife and I am married to my best friend, Craig. I love anything that puts me in close contact with nature and I love living life naturally. Organic gardening, including worm composting, sewing, knitting and green crafting are my favorite at-home hobbies. When I get out, I love to hike, camp and go to the beach. One of the best things I think I can do for my children is to teach them about our planet and what we can do to preserve it. I love how my 4-year-old gets very upset when he finds littered trash on the ground and knows which trash can to put it into.

Why I became a doula:

I became a doula because I had a wonderful experience birthing my two children I also strongly felt my first birth would have been so much better with a doula to ease my concerns and fears especially during transition. I know that every woman can have the experience she wants. It doesn’t matter if it is at home, in a hospital, in water out of water with an epidural or not. I want other women to know that child birth doesn’t have to be scary, and it can be a beautiful time filled with wonderful memories, every part of the birth. Child birth is not what our society views it to be, our bodies are meant to birth children, our hips are made to open up and release the baby naturally. I want to empower women with the knowledge and resources they need to have a good experience birthing their own children. I want to be able to help that experience along by supporting a woman through her birth so she does not feel scared or alone.
